Was at the Convo last night to watch St. Edwards upset UTSA in the Roadrunners home opener. While losing your home opener to a DII team is not acceptable under any circumstances I actually did not leave that game feeling like UTSA basketball is losing to a DII level bad this year. Here are some observations from the game.
  • Starting line up: De Nicolao, Wallace, Frohnen, Bior, Allen
  • Game essentially came down to UTSA's inability to make three's and their inability to defend the three point line.
  • Henson stuck with his 3-2 zone all game long which in normal circumstances would be fine except SEU was draining threes everytime down the court for long stretches of the game (12-35, 34%).
  • UTSA in the other hand was awful from three point range hitting only 5-26 (19%) which is just not like them at all. I don't think this will be a pattern, but still something to be concerned about.
  • The rotation went pretty deep for UTSA with 11 players logging minutes for the Roadrunners. This will not be the case on Monday when UTSA takes on Oklahoma. Expect the rotation to go 8 deep with Rodriguez, Bynum, & Iyaye coming off the bench.
  • One of the statistical bright spots was the 48 rebounds UTSA was able to get. This team is bigger than in years past. Under Henson UTSA has been a good rebounding team regardless of the height of his players. Will be fun to see this team rebound now that they have some bigger bodies out there.
  • We talked about the lack of threes and the lack of defending the three point line, but the real backbreaker last night was the 19 turnovers UTSA committed. Atem Bior one of the newcomers this year committed 6 of those turnovers and while he did get 7 rebounds he will not be on the floor for extended minutes if he turns the ball over at that clip.

UTSA takes on the Oklahoma Sooners at the Convocation Center this upcoming Monday.
