It's been quiet around here for much of December, and I've been pretty quiet too, as I haven't had any recruiting news or tidbits of my own worth sharing. So, I'll do what I do best (read: most) and throw out the name of a junior recruit worth keeping an eye on.
Walter Dawn is an undersized athlete who plays a mix of running back and slot receiver for Mesquite Poteet. In the 2014 season, he rushed for 722 yards and 5 TDs on 110 carries (6.56 yards/carry) and caught 24 passes for 413 yards (17.2 yards/carry) and 5 more TDs. I believe he also scored on a punt return. He's a small guy (5'6.5" and 165 pounds, according to himself), but he plays bigger than his size, and with the ball in his hands he's very quick in space and shows good balance and the ability to break tackles. I think he could be a very good slot receiver in college, and maybe a guy who makes occasional appearances in the backfield or gets the ball on a lot of screens and jet sweeps. It will be interesting to see how Poteet uses him in 2015, as their top ball-carrier of the past two years, Jaylon Smith, is a senior this year.
Dawn has no offers yet but names TCU, SMU, Purdue, Washington, Washington State, and Oregon State as schools he has received interest from. He says he hasn't heard from UTSA but would "definitely be interested" in the program if the coaches showed interest, as he's friends with current Roadrunner and Poteet alum Nate Gaines.
