A couple of years ago we wrote a post-Signing Day article in which we quoted unnamed high school coaches giving their views of UTSA's signees in the 2014 class. We didn't attempt something like that this time around, but I did reach out to a friend of mine who is the offensive line coach at a 6A school in the Metroplex, and I asked for his first impressions of the Hudl film of UTSA's three offensive line signees in the 2016 class. I gave him only the basic background of the three and added that it's kind of hard to evaluate their fit with it still being unknown just what kind of offensive system and blocking schemes the new staff will employ. Here's what he had to say.
Stefan Beard: "This guy is your classic mauling guard. He does well in the zone system that Navarro runs but I never saw much of him pulling or really getting out and running so I don't know how well I can gauge his athleticism. He does a good job of getting to the second level. One thing that needs work is he gets out a little to far over his toes and good defensive linemen will recognize that and pull him down. I like him, though. He finishes. Seems like a pretty good pass blocker as well. Good feet."
Tanner Myers: "He does have good length. One thing that the scheme he is in that makes it difficult to evaluate is just how physical or nasty he is. That scheme he is in is RPO [run-pass option] based so there is a little finesse to it but I would still like to see more physicality. He seems to do more position blocking and he's not really devastating as a blocker. He has decent feet in the run game. His kick slide is a little sloggish but he uses good body positioning. His hands in pass pro need work. He's going to allow a good pass rusher to get the inside of his body if he doesn't narrow his hands but that is a coachable fix."
Josh Oatis: "This kid is pretty raw. That being said, he does come off the ball. I'm not sure of the competition level or the amount of coaching he gets but he needs a redshirt year and a couple good years of S&C and coaching to maximize. He's a little stiff and kind of awkward in his body it seems. It's good soft clay, he is just a time investment."
