Some of the elder members on the board know I have a scout friend in charge of Texas. He's a local and attends UTSA Pro Day each year. I'm not a huge combine guy (I rarely attend even Rivals camps unless I'm paid extra), so I just rely on him to give me his thoughts. He's a former player not too huge on the numbers, so I didn't ask for any specifics on bench press numbers/40's. I wanted to know more about general thoughts on these guys/draft chances.
David Morgan
The number circulated at the event was 4.85 and Morgan seemed to confirm that in the interviews afterwards. That aligns with what my friend saw. "He only helped himself," he said. "We know he isn't running a 4.6, but he improved today." I'm assuming he meant improved his 40 time from the combine. I'll sum up his thoughts on Morgan based on numerous conversations. These aren't direct quotes and I cleared that with him before posting, but here is the general outlook on Morgan from at least one pretty high-ranking NFL scout.
- Mid-round guy. Really depends on the type of offense and how much value the tight end has in the system. He's a plus blocker and that helps because he isn't fast enough to line up with his hand off the ground too often. Big body and knows how to use it. Massive hands and quick. Not much long speed. Big target ratio but he'll always need to make catches in tight coverage because he can't create a ton of separation at the top end of a route. Three-down tight end with flex possibilities in the red zone.
Others
Trevor Baker, Aaron Grubb, Scott Inskeep, Jason Neill, Bennett Okotcha, Brian Price, Mauricio Sanchez, Blake Terry and Duke Wheeler also participated in the pro day. Inskeep was a senior on the 2014 team.
Inskeep is still a monster. His agent reported on Twitter that he was 6-foot-4, 310 pounds and ran a 5.2 and a 5.3. He had 34 reps on the bench press (225 pounds). The most done at the 2016 combine was 33. His strength is unquestioned, but he has injury history and there are concerns about his athleticism/quickness. I was told he's a guy who'd need to work up from a practice squad player, but his size and strength would get him to a camp this fall.
I honestly wish I could pump sunshine down your throat on this one, but outside of Morgan, don't expect any player from UTSA to get drafted or have much of a chance to make a 53-man NFL roster. A few guys like Neill, Okotcha and Price likely get camp invites. Big-bodied dudes with athleticism always have an outside chance. Okotcha's film isn't overly impressive against the top competition and he isn't overly fast for the position. It's probably unfair, but Price and Neill both have injury history's that concern scouts, as well.
Not a ton of information, but one man's view of pro day today.
