The discussion about Tyrone Hunt getting late interest from Baylor got me thinking about some recent recruits who either flipped from UTSA shortly before signing day in past years or who turned them down for another non-P5 school. UTSA has had some good evaluations, judging by the fact that they were one of the early offers for guys like Jordan Feuerbacher (Baylor), Cole Anderson (Iowa State), Cole Walterscheid (Oklahoma State), Connor Mayes (Minnesota), Travin Howard (TCU), and Verkedric Vaughns (Baylor), and that was just in the 2014 class. Many of them were talented enough that there was really no way they were going to end up at UTSA, but some of them were only flipped (or waited to commit until) very late in the process.
So, why not see where a few almost Roadrunners are now, and we can speculate on what their prospects might be for 2015 had they signed with your favorite school instead.
S Travin Howard (2014) - flipped from UTSA to TCU about 2 weeks before signing day.
Currently listed as 6'1" 190. He appeared in all 13 of TCU's games as a true freshman in 2014, though he did not record any stats.
S Jared McGee (2014) - Committed to UTSA, then accepted a late grayshirt offer from Northwestern and flipped the weekend before signing day. I think I was a bigger fan of him than most on the board were.
Currently listed as 6'1" 220. If he's really filled out that much and is still as much of a ball-hawk as he was at Mansfield Legacy, he's gonna be a nice player in the Big Ten.
WR Brandon Colon (2014) - signed with Navy over offers from UTSA and a pair of Ivy League schools.
Currently listed as 6'4" 205, played in all 13 of Navy's games as a true freshman in 2014, made 3 catches for 39 yards. Moved to Los Fresnos from Sherman before his junior year, and it always hurts to lose south TX kids to out-of-state programs, even a service academy.
S Denzel Johnson (2013) - UTSA was his only offer for a long time, and after taking an official there in late January he took one to TCU the weekend before signing day and committed there.
Currently listed as 6'2" 205, has played in every game since he arrived on campus, making 6 total tackles as a true freshman in 2013, and 16 total stops this past season.
OL Dillon Vaughan (2013) - Chose to sign with West Texas A&M over UTSA, joining his older brother Dustin, who broke WTA&M school records at QB and signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.
Currently listed as 6'6" 298, started five games at right tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2014, and appeared in most of the other games.
OL Derek Elmendorff (2013) - Had a Daryl Godfrey-like recruitment, where he de-committed from UTEP in December 2012 and flipped to UTSA, then flipped back to UTEP on January 20, 2013 after being recruited by its new coaching staff.
Currently listed as 6'3" 310, redshirted as a freshman, then started 11 games at right guard as a RS freshman in 2014.
Those are a few who came to mind, I'm sure some of you who've followed the team much closer and for much longer could point to some others.
