Time for a new thread for a new class of college prospects. Hopefully I'll have more to add to it going forward. For now, I'll lead off my ongoing list of 2022 prospects I like with LB Wesley Smith (Midland Lee).
Smith doesn't have a Rivals profile yet and doesn't have a great number of college coaches following him on Twitter either, but I suspect that will change this spring. Listed at 6' 205, he's a very rangy and strong kid (he reportedly can bench press 365) who plays inside LB in Lee's 3-4 front and in the 2020 season he was named District 2-6A's Defensive Player of the Year. He led his 9-2 Lee team with 119 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles, and in his highlights he is also shown blocking a punt and recovering it for a TD.
2020 was his first season to play varsity ball, as he missed his sophomore season with a torn left ACL, and had his freshman season cut short due to the same injury. Lee's head coach and defensive coordinator have both called him one of the best LBs they've ever coached, and Lee HC Clint Hartman has likened him to former Texas Tech star and longtime NFL LB Zach Thomas.
