Coker, UTSA's fate

Just had some expanded thoughts on the buzz among fans about Coker... the job he's done, his age, how long he will be here, etc.

Whenever coaching changes come up, usually the lack of funds comes along with it. I think head coach is the exception. Just browsing assistant pay at bigger schools, Coker's salary would be an raise for many of these guys. He would also have to be unproven and looking to land that first job. Don't forget, Jim Harbaugh started at San Siego. Not the SDSU of the Mountain West, FCS San Diego.

The same issues extend to assistants and coordinators. I highly doubt UTSA would go the way of last stop on the coaching train again, though it will be tempting to admin because they value stability. The money issue will linger and ultimately affect how long UTSA can keep someone if they have success. I think the fate of UTSA will be that of Arkansas St. or Central Michigan... a proving ground for someone who is looking to move up.

No matter what happens, Coker put UTSA on the map from day one. While recruiting has been slow this season, he and the staff have a pholipsphy and have stuck with it, and it's produced a talented roster. He took a chance on UTSA and worked inexpensively. I'll be forever grateful.

Seeing what is happening at UNT is scary. That team won 9 games including a bowl game only two years ago and look where they are now. I don't think UTSA will fall to those depths, but a couple of lost recruiting classes, lack of team improvement, and you're eating Portland State's boot. I think the roster at UTSA is too talented to allow that collapse, but I digress.

2014 was supposed to be icing on the cake and UTSA was supposed to take some medicine in 2015. The '14 collapse jaundiced perception and fans wanted improvement immediately in '15. I still think this team can right the ship and win 4 or 5 more games to end the year. That certainly would go a long way to increasing optimism as UTSA heads into 2016.
