UTSA picked up a verbal pledge from Donovan Perkins of Zachary HS in Louisiana. It is the 10th commit for UTSA in 2017.
UPDATE: Spoke with Perkins over the weekend.
Perkins is the 10th member of the UTSA class and the second linebacker taken. He's currently a two-star prospect at Rivals.com. He says he stands at 5-foot-11 and 228 pounds. Perkins can play either linebacker position in a 4-2-5.
"At the end of my tour on campus at UTSA coach Frank took me to his office and sold me on the program," Perkins said when asked what made him go-ahead and commit. "He talked about his view of the program and talked about all the investing UTSA is doing in football. He runs it more like a family than a business and that was important to me."
Another thing that was important? Trust.
"I know I can trust coach Frank and so can my parents. I've known of him through some guys I train with for years. UTSA is probably not in the picture without coach Frank," Perkins insisted. "He's a major reason why I'm going to UTSA. It's not just football with him, either. He talked about the next 40 years of my life as much as he did the next four years."
On the football field, Perkins describes himself as a player who likes to "play fast and physical."
"I'm really into watching film and being a student of the game. I want to know their offense. I won't be out worked," he said. "I play middle linebacker but I can play either spot. All of their linebackers are juniors or seniors so I could come in and play early. That was another factor for me."
Perkins gave nice reviews of San Antonio for a first time visitor.
"It was a beautiful campus. It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. It had everything you'd want as a student."
