IRVING — UTSA senior Marcus Davenport has been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Rice, the league office announced Monday.
Davenport registered 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one pass breakup and a fumble return for a touchdown in the Roadrunners' 20-7 victory against the Owls on Saturday. The defensive end scooped up a loose ball in the backfield and returned it 34 yards for the game's first score. He helped lead a defense that posted seven TFLs, four sacks and a pair of interceptions in holding Rice to seven points and 300 yards of offense.
The San Antonio native, who ranks second on the team with 32 total stops, is second among Football Bowl Subdivision players with 2.0 tackles for loss per game and fifth nationally with 1.08 sacks per outing. The preseason all-conference selection has recorded 19 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 4.5 sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble return TD in the last two contests.
Davenport is the second Roadrunner to be honored with one of the league's weekly awards this season, as Josiah Tauaefa collected co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25.
The Roadrunners (4-2, 1-2) will travel to El Paso to face UTEP (0-7, 0-3) at 7 p.m. Central time Saturday, Oct. 28.
