I caught up with Stephone Atkinson, the 6’3” 220 pound defensive end out of Lake Minneola, Florida, about his recruitment. Stephone told me that his process has been going great so far and that he just has to “keep trusting the process and get better day by day.” He said he’s been getting a lot of interest from many schools, but the main ones he hears from are UTSA, NIU and FSU. He continued to tell me that he hears from Coach Sands the most out of the UTSA coaches.
Atkinson spoke very highly of Coach Frank Wilson saying, “I believe Coach Frank Wilson will be a great coach for the UTSA Roadrunners football program on and off the field.” He continued talking about Coach Wilson by saying, “He seems like a great coach that you can just have that great vibe with.” When we spoke about UTSA, Stephone said, “It’s not too big and not too small. It is a great university that is on a come up overall. There are many experiences and opportunities to learn at the University of Texas San Antonio.” He told me that what really sets him apart compared to others at his position is “my passion I will bring to a new upcoming role. I motivate others, push others to their fullest capability, and be a role model. Set the tone off right and positive.” I continued by asking him about what he looks for in a possible school to commit to and he said he “looks for a great environment. A university that makes me feel like I’m at home with friends, family and coaches.”
We talked about how his talents would be used on the field, and he said that coaches have been telling him that “they will have me as a hybrid DE/OLB.” Stephone definitely has the size, length and skill to play at a high level in this hybrid position. He currently doesn’t have a top three, but he says he’s “remaining humble” throughout the whole process. To finish off I asked if he’d be at UTSA’s junior day, and he said that it’s a no as of right now because he was unaware of the junior day, but he will speak with his parents about possibly making it out. Let’s hope that Stephone can make it out and that the coaches can blow him away once he gets to campus.
