There have been various names thrown out in regards to who will lead UTSA next season and beyond, but I think these names should be strongly considered.
-Mike Sanford, (OC at Norte Dame), works well with QB's and has had success everywhere he's been.
-Mario Cristobal (Offensive Assistant at Alabama), heck of recruiter, has prior HC experience (he has already displayed that he can create a culture of winning).
-Lincoln Riley, (OC at Oklahoma), possesses the skills and attitude to turn around an offense. He can make an average offense and turn it into a great offense. He also has experience recruiting in the state of Texas.
-Justin Wilcox, (DC at USC), can create a west coast recruiting pipeline for UTSA (getting JUCO's out of Pierce College on a consistent basis is not a pipeline). Shows he can build and maintain good defenses, has had success everywhere he's been.
-Vance Bedford, (DC at Texas), has shown success on this side of the ball and can help build a solid secondary.
Some of these guys may be tough to obtain, but that should not stop UTSA in trying. I truly believe with the right offer there will be no reason why we could not obtain any of these guys.
UTSA can also try looking in the professional ranks and should take a good look at the following guys:
-Bob Bicknell (Wide Receivers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles), comes from a coaching family, which is always a plus.
-Mike Vrabel (Linebackers Coach for the Houston Texans), this would be a solid move, has coaching experience at both levels (College and Pros), and would bring a tough attitude to the program. UTSA lacks discipline on the field with constant penalties on crucial drives. Vrabel, former player of Bill Belichick, understands this very well, and won't tolerate that kind of play from his players. He is also a winner and brings instant creditability with all those Super Bowl rings.
If money keeps getting used as an excuse, then we have the wrong people running our athletic department. There was no secret that money was needed to get a football team started, and especially no secret that more money was needed to take UTSA to the next level. It takes money to make money. I am not advocating that we should go out and pay a head coach $4M plus a year, but what Coker was getting paid was not going to attract much interest when a lot of these good up and coming coaches are making just as much if not more as assistants. UTSA needs to be more aggressive. If they don't get this right they can risk whatever momentum UTSA has already achieved.
Now there have been some solid names thrown out so far, but I think the guys above can really bring in what UTSA needs. That's proven success and a winning attitude.
Go Roadrunners!!
