I got bored last night and wanted to look at UTSA’s head-to-head recruiting battles vs UNT over the last 5 years. I know both teams actively recruit against each other and due to the rivalry and recent loss, I was curious. I used 247 for the basis of the below information. Interesting stuff:
First, if we look at the overall CUSA rankings, UNT has had a slight advantage over UTSA in rankings projection. Over the last 5 years, UNT has an average CUSA ranking of 5.2 and UTSA 6.2. If you look at 2019-2021, UNT has had a significant upswing in in their CUSA rank as they were at (4) in 2019, (2) in 2020 and (1) in 2021. In 2021, UTSA was considered to have the 2nd best recruiting class after UNT.
UTSA
2017 – 75th Nationally, 3rd in CUSA
2018 – 85th Nationally, 7th in CUSA
2019 – 96th Nationally, 10th in CUSA
2020 – 91st Nationally, 9th in CUSA
2021 – 82nd Nationally. 2nd in CUSA
UNT
2017 – 115th Nationally, 11th in CUSA
2018 – 101st Nationally, 8th in CUSA
2019 – 76th Nationally, 4th in CUSA
2020 – 68th Nationally, 2nd in CUSA
2021 – 78th Nationally, 1st in CUSA
Over these past five years I also wanted to look at the head-to-head battles. This was the meat of the information I wanted to see. What would have happened to UTSA if they lost one of these key recruiting battles? What if UTSA were able to land the Murphy brothers from UNT? Ultimately, the good news is that UTSA wins most of the battles when both UTSA and UNT have offered. UTSA wins approximately 70% of the time. Here are the head-to-head recruiting battles between both schools:
Frank Harris – UTSA
Sincere McCormick – UTSA
Rashad Wisdom – UTSA
Tariq Woolen – UTSA
Jamal Ligon – UTSA
Trumane Bell – UTSA
Xavier Player – UTSA
Kam Scott – UTSA
JaCorey Hyder – UTSA
Je’Vaun Dabon – UTSA
Josh Davies-Balogun – UTSA
Vance Vallair – UTSA
Grayson Murphy – UNT
Gabriel Murphy – UNT
Jevin Murray – UNT
Jimmy Walker – UNT
Garnett Burke – UNT
Upton Stout - UNT
