The Roadrunners hit the practice field for the first time in fall camp today. There was a small window of 20 minutes for the media to get a glimpse of practice. After practice Coach Wilson, Josiah Tauaefa, and Josh Stewart spoke with the media on how the first day went. Here are the highlights

Frank Wilson
  • Effort was good at times. Intensity was good at times. Consistency is still something we're seeking but more importantly, finish. Did not finish the practice the way we would like but I can't say its a typical first day. You have expectations you want to attain and as long as you have effort and intensity those things will come.
  • It felt different from first day last year. Last year there was no expectation of how to practice, how to enter the field, how to transition, how each individual period, drill and the entire team concept how that's composed, that's something we were still developing at that time. We know how to do that now and we want to take it to a whole other level. We don't want to be at the same pace we were a year ago, we want to be better than we were at that time.
  • This camp is about us identifying who we are and bettering ourselves, our conditioning, our techniques, our schemes of what we need to do to block an opponent, to cover an opponent, to throw and catch and to be precise in those areas. Right now we're not opponent driven, we're reflecting in the mirror to try and better ourselves
  • No individuals stood out. We had solid performances all across the board but everybody took their first day miscues and its something we'll have to build upon.
  • Weather is great. Its San Antonio. If it rains we'll play in the rain. For us one of our goals is to be weatherproof. Whatever it is, whether its last year in Albuquerque for the bowl game or its today on the first day of (fall) practice), we deal with the elements and build our team to be weatherproof. We want to be able to play whatever the situation is.
Editor note: Wilson also mentioned that Michael Moore, Keeyon Smart and Jay Jay Smith won't play with UTSA this year. He said they have been replaced by other players on the roster.
