IRVING, Texas – For the second consecutive week and third time this season UTSA’s Keaton Wallace has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, for the week ending Dec. 10, the league office announced Monday.
Wallace has also been recognized as the league’s top frosh on Nov. 13 and Dec. 4. Wallace and teammate Jhivvan Jackson (Nov. 2) have combined for four of the five weekly C-USA freshman honors this season.
The Dallas native finished the week averaging a 20.5 points on 37.8 percent shooting (33.3 percent from three), 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. He opened the week with 17 points on seven field goals, including three 3-pointers in the Roadrunners’ 85-point effort at Oklahoma. He scored nine of UTSA’s 37 first-half points in 17 minutes against the Sooners and eight second-half points. He netted five of UTSA’s first eight second-half points, including a three to cut the OU lead to 48-45.
Wallace totaled a team and season/career-high 24 points (7 FG, 5 3FG) in 32 minutes to go along with three boards and three assists against Houston Baptist. He scored six points in the opening 20 minutes against HBU and 18 in the second half. After HBU cut the UTSA lead to five with 6:26 to play, Wallace made threes on back-to-back possessions as part of 10 total points in a 14-3 run that put the game away.
The 6-foot-3 guard has totaled four 20 point games and nine double-digit scoring efforts in 11 outings this season.
Second-year head coach Steve Henson has now coached eight C-USA Freshman of the Week award winners – the four this season along with Byron Frohnen’s three last season and Giovanni De Nicolao’s one.
UTSA returns to the court Saturday, Dec. 16 as hosts to Bethany College at 7 p.m.
