I had the chance to chat with Nolan Matthews, the tight end out of Rick Reedy, about his recruitment. Nolan told me that his recruitment has been going well so far and that the process is really starting to pick up for him. The main schools that he is hearing from are Missouri, Texas, Uconn, Kansas, UTSA, SMU and Texas State. UTSA is definitely competing with some high profile programs in Matthews’ recruitment.

Nolan went on to tell me that the UTSA coach that he hears from the most is Coach Vizza. When asked about his opinions of the coaching staff, Matthews told me, “I think the staff is really honest and real and that is what I look for, and they are excited about me.” It seems as if the staff has already made a good impression on Matthews by being up front and real with him. He went on to talk about how he feels about Coach Frank Wilson by saying, “I know that he knows how to coach his players to the next level (the DE that’s going first round), that is ultimately where I want to be.” It bodes well for UTSA that Matthews is aware of Wilson’s ability to put top talent into the NFL draft. We talked about his thoughts on UTSA, and he talked about how some of his old AAU basketball teammates go to UTSA, and how they love it there. He stated, “The classes have a personal feel and don’t have half the school in one class and their athletics are on the come up.” He’s looking forward to making it to campus for the first time.

Matthews talked about what sets him apart from other recruits at his position by saying, “I think my athletic ability at my size sets me apart. Me being able to have the feet of a receiver and able to get open against corners just as well as safeties and linebackers.” He also talked about his mentality and how he wants to prove everyone wrong, and how he wants to go at all the top guys to prove himself. He showed off his drive and ambition by saying, “My lock screen are the tight ends ranked ahead of me.” He wants to go after that top tight end spot. Lastly, he told me about what he looks for in a school to commit to, saying, “I’m looking for a coach I can trust and know that they care about me outside of football and not just my athletic abilities. Somewhere where I can be used not just as a blocking tight end, but a school that throws to their tight end a lot.”
