Football travels lead Kerry Thomas to San Antonio
By Stephen Whitaker
Kerry Thomas has travelled a long and winding road. It has led him to UTSA where he is competing for a spot on the wide receiver depth chart.
Thomas grew up in St. Rose, Louisiana, 30 miles outside of New Orleans. Before he went into the seventh grade he moved to College Station, Texas.
"I think my parents wanted to move me away from the New Orleans lifestyle," Thomas said. "It was a better environment (in Texas). My uncle had moved here after Katrina and he wanted my family to move here with him. I think it was the best move that we could have made."
At A&M Consolidated High School he was a standout player in basketball before joining the Tigers football team for his junior season. When it came time for college, Thomas looked for somewhere close to his family. UTSA fit the bill.
"I've never been a guy that has wanted to go too far from my family," Thomas said. "I wanted to go somewhere that my mom could come and watch all of my games."
Thomas played in 11 of the 12 games in his freshman year back in 2014. He finished the year with five catches for 81 yards and scored a 47-yard touchdown against Western Kentucky. Now he hopes to get back to that level in his junior season this fall.
