Kyle McKinney guards close to home
By: Stephen Whitaker
Junior Guard Kyle McKinney is a product of the San Antonio Area. He learned the ins and outs of offensive line at Boerne Champion High School and then chose to stay in the southern half of the hill country by joining UTSA.
"It felt comfortable here," McKinney said. "It felt like home. With my parents moving to Dallas after I graduated high school it has become a home away from home."
McKinney was redshirted in 2013 and got into the games against Houston and Western Kentucky in 2014. Now he is looking forward to getting a chance to fight for a spot on the offensive line before the end of spring practice.
"I feel like the team has got a ton of energy. Everyone is on the same level," McKinney said. "We all have to prove ourselves. No one's spot is guaranteed."
McKinney has noticed a change in practice not just from the players but also the new coaching staff.
"The coaches are highly energized. They make it fun for us," McKinney said. "They tell us to have joy like its back in little league."
Now as the spring game approaches this Saturday, McKinney will hope to take advantage of the opportunity to show what he can do before the long break until fall camp.
