Names will be swirling around over the next week, as UTSA narrows down its search for a head coach. I'd think the Roadrunners want this decision done by the end of next week (the 15th) if possible. That leaves a little over two weeks for the new coach to salvage a 2016 recruiting class and put together a staff before spring.
One name to know is Curtis Luper. The TCU running back coach, I'm told, applied and is interested for the job. The interest is mutual, but it is hard to know how narrow the talks are right now and how many candidates are also getting vetted and researched.
Luper was also interested in the Texas State and ULM jobs, according to reports.
My take: When Texas State couldnt' get it done with Meachum, I thought Luper would get the offer. He checks a lot of boxes for UTSA. He has a lot of experience, knows the state of Texas very well, is a really, really good recruiter and he's a really good interview, which means he'll be good at all the talking events that come with being a head coach. He's also probably pretty affordable. UTSA could go in much worse directions.
