- UTSA held an open practice Friday night, and it was just that. The team did a bit of everything, but there wasn't a ton of 11-on-11 to report on. That was probably on purpose. It was hard to get a feel for the two-deep because both the offense and defense were mismatching a lot of guys and lineups.
- The first-team offensive line, from left to right, was Reed Darragh, Kyle McKinney, Will Cavanaugh, Austin Pratt, Jordan Gray. Zach Hester and Juan Perez didn't practice. The offensive line struggled in team drills against the blitz. Darragh continues to be the most impressive offensive lineman, in my eyes. It was my first look at Pratt in real action and he looked solid. He needs to work on attacking with his hands.
- Bogenschutz is the starter. I don't care what any coach says about an open competition. It is his job to lose. Austin Robinson looked good tonight.
- The running back position is talented. Jarveon Williams is the guy, but there are options after him, including freshman Brett Winnegan. He got a lot of reps tonight.
- The wide receivers look good. JaBryce Taylor is a monster. Kerry Thomas is a stud. The younger guys are getting a lot of work with Grubb and Bias out. Each is expected back soon. Don't think there is a ton there to worry about with those guys. Tight end is stacked, too. David Morgan is special. I continue to like what Shaq Williams brings and Trevor Stevens has soft hands for a guy known for blocking.
- The defensive line looked good. T.J. King was working with the defensive tackles and he looked big. Kevin Strong and Vontrell King-Williams were held out of practice. Brian Price is the team's best defensive lineman and it isn't even close. Young guys are going to play on both sides of the ball. Baylen Baker even picked up an interception off of a tipped pass. The defense went crazy.
- The linebacker position is exactly what we thought. There is almost no depth behind Drew Douglas. The Hawk position is in good hands.
- I didn't watch a ton of the secondary. Trevor Baker was out, but I was trying to watch more of the offensive/defensive line than the wide receivers and secondary because I think those positions have less questions than the trenches.
Thoughts from guys who were there?
