SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s basketball coach Steve Henson announced on Tuesday that Dante Buford (Greenville, S.C./Arlington Country Day School [Fla.]/Oklahoma) has signed a financial aid agreement to join the program. He will sit out the 2017-18 season per NCAA transfer rules and then have one year remaining in 2018-19.

“Dante brings a lot of things to our program,” Henson said. “He is a high-level athlete with the ability to knock down jump shots. He’s a versatile player who will help us in a lot of ways.”

After taking a redshirt as a true freshman in 2014-15, Buford appeared in 62 games over the past two seasons for the Sooners.

The 6-7 forward averaged 3.8 points and 15 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2016-17. He drained 16 3-pointers and posted seven steals, five blocks and five assists. He scored a season-best 13 points behind 4-of-6 shooting from the floor against Oklahoma State (Feb. 18) and he also reached double figures against the Cowboys with 11 on Jan. 30. He registered a season-high five rebounds against Kansas State and in the first meeting with Oklahoma State.

He chipped in with 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest and recorded 20 assists, 10 blocks and nine steals. He poured in a season-high 14 points at Iowa State on Jan. 18on the strength of a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night from beyond the 3-point line.

Rated as the nation's 72nd overall recruit by ESPN, No. 120 by 247Sports and No. 131 by Rivals.com, Buford averaged 16.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as a senior for head coach Rex Morgan at Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla.
