With nine days to go before the season opener the Roadrunners are ratcheting up their practices. On Thursday there were no players who spoke with the media but Frank Wilson did. Here is what he had for today

Coach Wilson
  • It was a big day today for us in the red zone area. Today is thriving Thursday, we try to thrive on Thursday, we put ourselves in position in the red zone to be able to defend. To build our bend but don't break mentality as a defense and to keep them out (of the end zone), make them settle for a field goal if we can.
  • Offensively when we get the ball in red zone we have to put the ball in the end zone. Last year we improved on it tremendously from the year before and of course we want to improve even from what we did a season ago.
  • Got into some two minute drill segments. First offense went down and drove the ball from the minus-39 and put themselves in position to kick a field goal, down by two, to win the game. Second offense got in against the first defense and was stopped short, they did not get themselves in position to win the game and had to go for it on fourth down. Outstanding job by both the first unit offense and first unit defense to preserve the victory for the Roadrunners.
  • Anticipation is growing for season opener. For us right now we moved into a Houston mindset, the introduction of them and their personnel. The heavy emphasis of it and balls to the wall, lets get after and prepare for the Cougars will happen Sunday. Nine days away. We're not quite ready yet, but we don't need to be, we have nine days to get there and hopefully in nine days we'll be ready to face a very quality opponent.
  • If we need to play up tempo we will. We did it a year ago. Everything is strategic. In situations when you are trying to move the ball down the field at a rapid rate, we can do it, its built into our offense already. We've never not been able to do it. There's times where the defense needs relief and we need to be methodical in our approach. We'll do so then. We're prepared to do whatever is necessary to win the football game. Our offense is built to be four minutes, be two minutes, be fast pace or to slow down.
  • Would suspect Houston's intentions would be to run 80 plays. Hope we can get them off the field and play sound on defense.
  • Think we're going to have a big crowd (next Saturday). The student body and the city of San Antonio is excited about this opponent and about this opener. I would hope and I encourage everyone out there, we'll need you, need your support for this football team to do well. Sometimes that crowd just does enough to get you over the hump at times. We're hopeful that we can get a huge crowd.
