Cloudy skies made for cooler temperatures today at the UTSA practice. It was still hot but not as hot as it usually is in August in South Texas. The Roadrunners wrapped up their first week of practice today and got ready for a busy weekend. The birds will practice again on Saturday before holding a closed scrimmage on Sunday afternoon.
Observations:
Still no word on who the starting quarterback will be for the Roadrunners. Vegas would have a hard time setting the odds for who is most likely as both potential starters Sturm and Johnson both looked good on Friday. For Johnson the problem has been trying to get reps while also taking part in the UTSA graduate program for business summer classes.
"The way practice has been going, Jarod is in a very intense graduate program and he's nearing the end of it so he's been hit or miss with practice," UTSA Head Coach Frank Wilson said. "He's in an accelerated program in graduate school that ends today so we'll get a better handle on it because the amount of reps will be balanced.
During the portion of practice that is open to media the team conducted the Roadrunner drill. The drill pits three defenders against three blockers who try to create a hole for the running back. The high point of the drill on Friday was when the third through fifth string quarterbacks lined up to block for the runner.
"It continues to build the mantra of our team, (which is) toughness. Some of our young quarterbacks were eager to get after it," Wilson said. "We tried to match them in stature and give them a chance, we tried to match them with kickers but we're not very deep at that position."
The quarterbacks-as-blockers might not catch on but senior running back Jarveon Williams was a fan.
"You don't see quarterbacks blocking too much but it was fun and they showed some aggression," Williams said. "If they get the job done I'll gladly get behind them."
UTSA will hold a closed scrimmage on Sunday and hold Media Day on Monday. There are only 22 days remaining until the Season Opener against Alabama State in the Alamodome.
