Another day of Roadrunner practice was completed in a steady rain. There was no lightning in the area so the team wasn't bouncing back and forth between the practice field and the campus rec. center. The Roadrunners also benefited from the modern artificial turf as it might have been more difficult to get a good practice in the mud. Though Coach Wilson is a fan of natural grass.
"I only wish we had grass so I could have just slid out there and dove into the mud," Wilson said with a smile. "The synthetic turf is great, it allows us to continue to have a productive practice and weather to not be an issue."
Observations:
In other news there was no open portion of practice for the media to observe today but the opportunity to talk with incoming transfer quarterback Jared Johnson did present itself. Johnson has been busy the first weeks of camp finishing up a business class for his masters program. That class ended last week and Johnson has spent the time between "semesters" fighting for a chance at the starting lineup.
"We're getting better every day," Johnson said. "We're just trying to get as ready as we can for September 3rd."
Johnson and Dalton Sturm are dead even in the battle for starting quarterback. Coach Wilson didn't divulge who the leader is. For his part Johnson didn't give up too many secrets either.
"We're both making a lot of good plays," Johnson said. "We're both coming out here everyday and giving it our best. Its a good competition so far."
On the defensive side of the ball Roadrunner fans would be wise to keep an eye (and an ear) out for Jordan Moore. The senior safety is coming to UTSA after having lived the Johnny Cash song "I've been Everywhere." Moore is originally from Atlanta, Georgia and has played at TCU and LSU. He also ran track and is friends with a few members of the USA olympic track team. Moore is not just a talented safety but he can sing as well. He gave an example to the media on Saturday singing, "I've been so many places in my life and time,"
Moore chose football over track but mentioned that he intends to get back to running track after his college football career is over.
"For right now I feel like football is my main focus," Moore said. "Strictly football for right now."
The Roadrunners will have a closed scrimmage tomorrow. The birds start fall classes on Tuesday which is also the next day of media availability at practice. Check back Tuesday afternoon for updates from that day's practice.
