Tuesday was a day of firsts at the UTSA practice. It was the first day in over a week that the Roadrunners were able to practice under sunny skies. It was also the first day of class for the players which meant many of the players had to leave practice as soon as it was over to do the student portion of student-athlete.
While they were able to practice the Roadrunners continued to work on getting acclimated to the new schemes. Later this week is when they plan on getting into more game planning for the Alabama State game a week from this Saturday.
Observations:
The first day of school gave a different feel to the practice on Tuesday. There was a little bit more of a sense of urgency as the season draws near.
It seemed no one was more excited for the first day of school than Head Coach Frank Wilson who came into the post-practice media session pumped and ready to go.
"Let's Go! First Day of School!" Wilson shouted to begin his press conference. "I'm feeling it because our kids feel it. We feed off each other. When they're energy is high, when they're excited about being 14 days from kickoff its contagious."
The players also bought into the excitement. Perhaps more the excitement of being close to the season but also the start of school.
"Everybody's happy that school's starting," Jarveon Williams said. "We have practice but we also have to go to class and do all your extra stuff. It's good energy being back out here and getting ready for the season."
The quarterback battle is continuing along with no word on who the starter will be between Dalton Sturm and Jared Johnson. Johnson was one of the players who had to leave practice early as he is taking five classes this semester. Jarveon Williams said he has been impressed with both quarterbacks.
"Those guys are always competing and that's what you want out of the leaders of your team," Williams said.
It still remains to be seen what the Roadrunner defense will do once the season starts but the Alamo defenders should be improved from last year based on what they have done in the recent scrimmages.
"Sunday they did extremely well," Wilson said of the defense. "In the scrimmage we had four or five turnovers. We're punching the ball out, intercepting the ball, not just knocking it down. The ability to create turnovers has been the bright spot for us."
Added Williams, "They look ready. They still have some things to work on but they look good."
All of the Roadrunners still have things to work on but as the season looms just one week from Saturday they look ready to go.
There will be another media availability for the Roadrunners practice on Friday. Check back then for another update. Saturday the team will hold Fan Appreciation Day at the Convocation Center from 2-4 p.m. so head out and meet the team.
