Just back from the practice this morning. It was the first day the Roadrunners were in pads and it began with the birdcage drill. For those who are new to the birds, the birdcage drill has a member of the offense go up against a member of the defense as they try to push the other past the middle.
"We enjoy it, it gets us going every morning," Defensive End Kevin Strong said. "(The Offense) won today but I guarantee you we're going to get them back on Thursday."
Other observations from today.
The Roadrunners worked on first and second down plays today. Both quarterbacks looked good but there is still no word on who the starting QB will be.
One of the new guys coming in that Roadrunner fans should keep an eye out for is Linebacker Ronnie Fiest. He was recruited to LSU by Frank Wilson and has followed the Roadrunners new head coach to the Alamo City where its still hot as Baton Rouge but not as humid, according to Fiest.
"Coach Frank has been a great mentor in my life," Fiest said. "I was honored to come here with a new program and start fresh."
Fiest is a graduate student at UTSA and so far in camp he has seen time at every position in the linebacker corps.
Overall Coach Wilson seemed pleased with where the team is so far in camp but there is still much to do before the season starts on September 3.
"Our team, whether we've been in full pads or just helmets have practiced at tempo that allows us to be at our very best," Wilson said.
Check back Friday for another update from the UTSA fall camp. The Roadrunners will also put on a Fan Appreciation Day at the Convocation Center on Saturday August 27 from 2-4 p.m.
