From Stephen Whitaker:
Despite early morning rain and misty conditions throughout their Wednesday practice the UTSA Roadrunners took another step forward.
At least to Head Coach Frank Wilson they took a step forward.
“This was the best practice we’ve had so far. You try to breed leadership. You look for leadership to come forth,” Wilson said. “There were times in the first couple of practices we waited for it to emerge and it didn’t necessarily reveal its head. Today it happened. We got better as team.”
The offense suffered an early case of the turnovers but they overcame those early issues.
“(On) the very first drill the defense recovered a fumble and we wanted to see how the offense would respond. The very next play Jarveon gashes them up the middle for 20 yards,” Wilson said. “The defense challenged the offense responded. The defense challenged again the offense responded again. It was exactly what we needed.”
The change was noticed by a few of the players as well.
“I feel like the team got a ton of energy,” Offensive Guard Kyle McKinney said. “It was fun.”
McKinney is one of several members of the offensive line group who are working on improvement before the end of the year.
“They are a young group. Even the ones who are older by classification are young by experience. They are gravitating to the work,” Wilson said. “It starts up front with our offensive and defensive line. When they play well we will play well.”
Wilson was also pleased with the special teams performance on Wednesday. The focus of the day was on kickoff return. Starting Friday all areas of special teams will get worked on as the team works its way toward the Football Fiesta spring game on April 23.
