If all speculation is true, UTSA and Frank Wilson nearly filled the defensive staff. We have separate threads on each of the candidates, so I'll just summarize here.
Pete Golding: Defensive coordinator/safeties
Eric Henderson: Defensive line
Ricky Brumfield: Cornerbacks/special teams
None of those are official right now, but that looks like the future staff. A linebackers coach is all that is left, unless Golding plans on coaching linebackers and Brumfield could coach the secondary. Either way, it is likely one more guy gets hired on the defensive side to do linebackers or safeties.
Pete Golding
Was most recently the secondary coach (safeties) at Southern Miss. Before that, he was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana (Southland Conference). He was known as a players coach at SELU, concentrating on fast defenses. He played some three-man fronts at SELU, but it is unclear what he'll run at UTSA. It is hard to see the roster setting up for a four-man linebacker unit.
Eric Henderson
Henderson was the quality control coach at Oklahoma State. The people I know who cover OSU football swear by Henderson as an up-and-comer in the coaching business. He has a great reputation as a recruiter.
Brumfield
Nothing wrong with taking an assistant coach from arguably the best program in the conference, especially if it is a lateral move. He also has a history with special teams, which means he fills two needs on staff if that is what Wilson plans.
My take: I'm a little surprised Wilson didn't grab a few guys with Texas hires. These are his guys and it was rumored he wanted a lot of these guys when he was hoping to bring to Tulane. He bet on himself by taking this coaching position and it is clear he's going to do it his way and with his guys. He's surrounding himself with young guys who are known for energy and recruiting. It can be argued those things were lacking inside the program over the past few seasons. The issue becomes scheme. That comes down to experience and this group, while exciting on paper, does have a lot to prove as individuals. Most are taking a jump up, including Wilson. That pressure either causes growing pains or a hunger we haven't seen inside UTSA since the beginning of the program. It could be both.
