Fans get small helping of football at spring game
By Stephen Whitaker
While it may not have had the intensity of an early November conference game the UTSA spring game on Saturday was enough to at least provide the San Antonio fans with chips and dip level football before the main course comes in September.
The chips were getting to see the Roadrunners back in action. The dip was the deep bomb drill at halftime where quarterbacks and receivers were able to show off their speed and distance for the crowd in attendance.
"We worked so many situations and variations. I liked the way the team responded. This program is built on competition and being able to get up off the mat."
Early on it was the Blue Birds that was on the mat trying to pick themselves up. The Orange Birds scored two touchdowns on rushes of three-yards and five-yards by Jalen Rhodes and led 14-0 at halftime.
"We started out really well the whole first half," Orange Quarterback Dalton Sturm said. "In the second half we hit a little bit of a slump. We were moving the ball well we just couldn't punch it in."
The Blue Birds scored on their first drive of the second half when Jaylon Henderson tossed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Aron Taylor.
Neither team was able to score after that until the last play of the third quarter when the Blues capped off a 10 play drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Corbin White as time expired on the third quarter.
Blue completed the comeback in the fourth quarter when Brett Winnegan rushed into the endzone from one yard out. The extra point was blocked but the Blues held the Oranges off and won the spring game 20-14.
Now the players will complete their spring semester of class and then prepare for the offseason workouts. For the fans there is only the long wait for August when the ingredients for the main course are thrown in the pot and begin cooking.
