I caught up with Simon Gonzalez, the 6’4” 220 pound TE out of Magnolia West. He told me that his recruitment has been a great and fun process thus far, and that, “Hearing all these schools interested in me is a pretty surreal thing!” Simon seemed very humbled from by his recruiting process. Simon told me, “Currently LA Tech and SMU are who I hear from the most right now communication wise.” Gonzalez continued by saying that he mainly hears from Coach Sands and his position coach.
Simon was in attendance for UTSA’s spring game, and told me, “The spring game was sweet! Got to meet a few players on the team after and they were some stand up guys. After that we had a lunch social, talked to my position coach and that was fun! He talked about how my skillset was versatile and that they’d be lining me up off and on the ball, which is something I’m really looking for throughout this recruiting process.” He then told me that he and his father went on to have a conversation with head coach Frank Wilson. Simon told me, “Coach Wilson told me everything that UTSA was all about and it was very appealing to me, academic and athletic wise.” It seems like Coach Frank Wilson really wowed Gonzalez on both the school that UTSA is and also about the direction that the football team is headed.
When asked about what he thinks of UTSA, Simon told me, “So far I think of UTSA as an awesome football team and amazing coaching staff! Everyone was so welcoming and enthusiastic!” He went on to tell me that he is taking the process slowly. So where does UTSA stand in Gonzalez’s recruitment? Simon told me that he just wants to focus on spring ball and team development with his current high school teammates. “My family and I will discuss my academic and athletic future after spring ball!”
