Texas high schools don't begin their season for another couple of weeks, but several other states kick off their high school football season this weekend.

UTSA wide receiver commit Dewuan McCullum and his teammates at Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, South Carolina will play their first game tonight at 7:30 eastern time against Spartanburg in a neutral site game to be played on the campus of Wofford College. Spartanburg finished 6-6 a year ago but begins this season as the 6th-ranked team in AAAAA, while Nation Ford had a 5-6 record and lost in the first round of the AAAAA playoffs in the 2017 season, but returns a number of starters. [Geography note: Fort Mill is in the far northern region of South Carolina, about 20 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina.]

After catching 43 passes for 723 yards as a sophomore, McCullum reportedly only played in 5 games as a junior last season due to injury, which might partly explain why FCS program Tennessee-Chattanooga was his only other reported offer at the time he committed to UTSA.

He's a well-regarded athlete in his area, but not quite ranked among the elite of the local talent. The Herald in Rock Hill, South Carolina published a piece this week in which it named the top high school football prospects in its coverage area. McCullum didn't make the top ten but he was one of 11 players named as "10 more prospects to watch". (I think the paper's sports editor might have forgotten to actually count the names there.)

For a Hudl refresher course on McCullum, here are his combined sophomore and junior season highlights.
