I haven't gotten around to posting updates or game schedules for UTSA's commits for the past few weeks. I'll blame that on a combination of being too busy with duties at home, other weekly projects, and pure lack of motivation to fit it in. We're entering week 9 and UTSA still had the same five commits they had whenever I last did a post like this. Here's how they've done lately and where they'll be playing next.
WR Jesse Ebozue (Arlington Bowie)
week 7: caught 1 pass for a 16-yard TD in a 63-7 win over North Crowley
week 8: caught 5 passes for 46 yards and a TD in a 61-21 loss to Arlington Martin
this week: Friday, October 23 at 8:00, vs. Arlington High (AT&T Stadium)
Ebozue is second on his team with 14 receptions, and fourth in receiving yards with 121. He has good size and athleticism, to be sure, and his low numbers can be partly attributed to Bowie relying heavily on its rushing attack, but it's still a bit worrisome to me that Ebozue has managed to produce such pedestrian stats thus far.
If UTSA were to lose a WR commitment or wants to add a third to the class, I'd recommend that they evaluate someone like Aaron Denson (Richland) or Nathan Stewart (Dallas Bryan Adams). Denson has put together a really good senior season (56 receptions for 1,024 yards and 11 TDs in 8 games) and recently had a game against Southlake Carroll in which he had a TD and over 100 receiving yards, mostly while being covered by Texas CB commit Obi Eboh or 2017 Oklahoma safety commit Robert Barnes. Stewart doesn't play for a great team or face great competition, but he has been dominant thus far, catching 48 passes for 1,049 yards (he also has 151 rushing yards on 10 carries), and showing very good acceleration once he gets the ball in his hands.
WR Jack Giblin (Port Neches-Groves
week 7: caught 3 passes for 49 yards and a TD (39 yards) in a 42-25 win over Lumberton
week 8: caught 6 passes for 134 yards and 2 TDs in a 30-27 loss to Nederland
this week: Friday, October 23 at 7:00, at Beaumont Ozen
DE Jerrod McLin (Carthage)
week 7: team defeated Henderson 35-15
week 8: caught 3 passes for 93 yards in a 31-28 loss to Kilgore
this week: Friday, October 23 at 7:30, vs. Brownsboro
McLin has seen time on offense in addition to playing on the defensive line. He has been credited with 20 receptions for 280 yards in 2015. He reportedly has 55 tackles through Carthage's first seven games.
DB Innis Gaines (Beaumont West Brook)
week 7: defense allowed only 259 total yards in a 40-20 win over Deer Park
week 8: blocked and returned a punt for a TD in a 27-26 win over Baytown Sterling
this week: Friday, October 23 at 7:00, at La Porte
Gaines' highlights from the Sterling game (which are well worth watching) also showed him being the last man to carry the ball following a blocked FG or PAT attempt in which the ball changed hands a couple of times before being pitched to Gaines. The box score didn't mention West Brook scoring on a blocked FG or PAT return, so there was probably a penalty on the play.
DB Carrington Kearney (Pflugerville Hendrickson)
week 7: had 8 carries for 48 yards and a TD in a 31-23 win over Round Rock Stony Point
week 8: completed 8 of 14 passes for 83 yards, and rushed 8 times for 7 yards in a 22-6 win over Pflugerville.
this week: Friday, October 23 at 7:00, at Round Rock (Dragon Stadium)
