Today was the weekly media roundtable with Coach Wilson. Here is what he had to say about Baylor, Southern and much more.

Frank Wilson
  • Got back a little after 2 a.m. Got up the next morning and graded the film, got prepared for our team and then started preparing for Southern University. Team came in and we watched the film. Sunday's are about the truth with us. The truth was we did the things necessary to win the football game.
  • We took a moment to reflect on the (Baylor) game and enjoy it because it was worth enjoying. It was a monumental feat for us. We enjoyed it and then its gone, its behind us. Now on to the next opponent.
  • I'm a Louisianan by birth so I've gotten a chance to observe the Southern program from a far for many years. They are a very prideful university that has a rich history and tradition. They had a plethora of guys go to the NFL. I know how they travel, how they compete. They are a talented group, especially at the skill positions. They were in 8-1 in conference last year, lost their finale in the Bayou Classic against Grambling. They put together 10-win seasons consistently.
  • Got a chance to watch them against Southern Miss and their opener against South Carolina State. They flashed some of their ability during those games. Still studying them. We will continue to study them the remainder of the week.
  • Defensively they return the guys up front, in the secondary they are youthful. They're starting QB missed the southern miss game. They are dangerous because they have guys that can run. We will have to defend them well. They are talented at the skill positions.
  • Expectations are right on track for us. We talked about finishing in fall camp. So many times we had been in that position (with a lead against a power 5) and just didn't know how to finish. I thought this week we grew up and we learned how to finish yet again which we started doing at the back end of last season. It was pleasing to see that, to be able to close out a quality opponent.
  • It doesn't matter who the opponent is we will be as meticulous in our preparation. Whether it is a power five school or FCS or whatever. We have to do the things that we need to do to give this opponent our undivided attention.
  • It's been way too long since we played in the Alamodome. Looking forward to going home and playing in our stadium in front of our fans.
  • Win over Baylor meant that we're on the right track and taking steps in the right direction. That we've done it once and the possibility of doing it again is a reality. No longer are we sitting here hopeful that we can beat such an opponent, its doable and we've shown we have the ability to do so.
  • The 'don't flinch mentality' was tested whether it be mother nature doing what she did and us refocusing and not having a game, gathering our thoughts and focusing on a quality opponent. Then at the back end of the week the suddenness of Mrs. Hickey retiring, respectful of it and understanding it but at the same time you don't flinch. You have a job to do. We do it to the best of our ability.
  • Everybody's role is pivotal. When we go into game preparation or a game itself, if you're a guy in the press box and your job is writing the play by play, you put your head down you write down the plays, if your watching the back end you don't see stunts in the front, you watch the back end. Whatever your role is you do your role.
  • Tremendous amount of admiration and respect for Lynn Hickey. I'm forever indebted to her because she saw something in me when many others did not. Love Lynn Hickey and all that she's done for this university. Wish her and Bill Hickey the very best as they deal with his health and the direction of their family. Couldn't say enough good things about her.
  • Was surprised as anyone to hear the news of her retirement. I found out when everybody else did.
  • Had three uncles that played for the legend, Eddie Robinson at Grambling State. Went to several Bayou Classics and other Grambling games growing up. Got to meet Eddie Robinson as a boy. I thought he walked on water. I always held him in the highest esteem.
  • Southern will be bringing fans in mass numbers. Our former senator in Louisiana Cleo Fields is a big contributor to Southern and said they're coming by the busloads.
  • The Southern band will be here. We afforded them that. They're excited to come down for the game.
