NEW YORK — UTSA junior Oscar Cardenas has been named to the John Mackey Award preseason watch list, the The Friends of John Mackey announced on Friday.

A product of San Antonio Brandeis High School, Cardenas is one of 54 FBS players — including one of three from Conference USA — on the list for the John Mackey Award, which is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.

A fourth-year junior, Cardenas has played in 30 career games and made five starts at tight end as a Roadrunner. A punishing blocker, he has caught 19 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns during his career, helping lead UTSA to 19 wins, a conference championship and a pair of bowl games over the last two seasons.

Cardenas recorded 16 receptions for 233 yards and a pair of TDs while appearing in all 14 games (four starts) last fall, helping guide the Roadrunners to a 12-2 record, the C-USA title, the program’s first top-25 ranking and to the Frisco Bowl. He hauled in two passes on in the final minute of UTSA’s 34-31 comeback win over UAB last November, including catching the game-winner on a tipped pass with three seconds left to help the Roadrunners secure the C-USA West Division crown. Cardenas also had an 11-yard TD reception in the 52-46 road victory over Western Kentucky.

UTSA will open its 12th season of play and third under 2021 C-USA Coach of the Year Jeff Traylor on Sept. 3against Houston. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Alamodome in a game that will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.

Tickets are on sale now by calling or texting 210-458-UTSA (8872) or visiting goUTSA.com.
