At least in the opinion of the Express-News and one other source, Adkins was the best of the best in San Antonio area during his senior year at Smithson Valley. Was he? Former teammate of Adkins, TCU's Trevon Moerig, who, according to Pro Football Focus is the number one safety in the country, had this to say about Adkins:
"He's one of the top quarterbacks I've seen throughout my football career. He's a very accurate passer, can scramble, can get the ball out …I remember back in high school when I was covering some of the guys he was throwing to, he gets the ball out so quick and is so accurate that a DB couldn't even get there to make the play…He's also really good at being able to look you off... He's just a really versatile player."
His record at NM State doesn't support Moerig's impression of Adkins' abilities. Could having one of the worst defensive records in the country in his two years at NM State...and a sub-par running game (weak OL?) have something to do with his performance?
