SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Frank Wilson announced Friday that he has named 36-year coaching veteran Al Borges as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“I am thrilled to be able to announce the hiring of Al Borges as our new offensive coordinator,” Wilson said. “Al Borges has a masterful offensive mind and a coaching style that takes advantage of the talent and skillset of the players on the roster. His unique ability to develop quarterbacks is second to none. Our coaching staff got better today.”

Borges, a two-time Broyles Award finalist for the best assistant coach in college football, comes to the Roadrunners from Auburn, where he served as an offensive analyst during the 2017 season. He helped the Tigers to a 10-4 overall record, the Southeastern Conference West Division crown with a 7-1 mark and an appearance in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Auburn’s potent offense averaged 451.6 yards and 33.9 points per game. All-American running back and SEC Offensive Player of the Year Kerryon Johnson rushed for 1,391 yards and 18 touchdowns, while SEC Newcomer of the Year quarterback Jarrett Stidham passed for 3,158 yards and 18 TDs.

He previously was the offensive coordinator at Michigan (2011-13), San Diego State (2009-10) and San José State (2009-10; 2015-16).

Borges spent four seasons as Auburn’s offensive coordinator in 2004-07. The Tigers posted a 41-9 record during his tenure, including an undefeated campaign and a No. 2 ranking in 2004, and Auburn was the only SEC team ranked in the Top 15 all four of those seasons.

During his first stint with the Tigers, he mentored the SEC Offensive Player of the Year in quarterback Jason Campbell and running backs Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown. All three were first-round NFL Draft picks in 2005 and Borges was named Rivals.com Offensive Coordinator of the Year that same season.

His impressive resume also includes offensive coordinator assignments at UCLA (1996-2000), where he tutored NFL Draft First-Round draft pick Cade McNown, Indiana (2002-03), California (2001), Oregon (1995), Boise State (1993-94), Portland State (1986-92) and Diablo Valley Community College (1985), as well as assistant coaching positions at Diablo Valley (1983-84) and California (1982).

Borges also served as an assistant coach for the USFL's Oakland Invaders (1984-85). The native of Salinas, Calif., began his coaching career as a high school assistant at Salinas and Chico Pleasant Valley.

A 1981 graduate of Cal State Chico, Borges and his wife Nikki have two children, Cole and Mady Joe.
