Intriguing tidbit presented by Lynn Hickey

I was reading yesterday's edition of Lynn Hickey's newsletter when I came across this part:

One Last Fact From The 2014 Football Season
Business Affairs Associate Vice President Pamela Bacon recently received an email from her neighbor Gregory Buschmann. It read: "Do you realize this: The Undisputed National Champions (Ohio State) lost to Virginia Tech, who lost to Temple, who lost to Houston, who lost to … UTSA. Congratulations to the Roadrunners on a historic season!"

Offensive Commit Breakdown

It's been a crazy few days for UTSA recruiting, and with only 3 slots remaining to fill (barring de-commits) I wanted to take a quick look at what we already have committed.

QB (1 Commit): Jaylon Henderson is already on campus as Dec. grad, and we have Manny Harris coming in the Fall. A solid QB class could use a JUCO transfer or maybe even a Grad Transfer.

RB (3 Commits): Jess Anders, Brett Winnegan, and D'Anthony Hopkins represent what is probably the best single position haul we would ever have at UTSA. Hopkins is our biggest threat to flip to a P5 school, but has remained pretty steady with us. Also rumblings that he may be a grades risk. Even if we don't hold onto Hopkins, Anders and Winnegan represent a REALLY good RB haul for us.

FB (1 Commit): Halen Steward would become the first ever UTSA FB signing. FB is one of those positions where you take 1 or none. We will only take 1.

WR (3 Commits): Derrick Dick, Peyton Hall, and Matt Guidry (converted HS QB/RB) is a solid CUSA group. Hall is, IMO, has the highest ceiling of the 3, but Dick and Guidry both bring big time Athleticism to the fold. I'd like the staff to go after 1 more big bodied type if possible. JUCO would be best.

TE (1 Commit): JUCO transfer Kelvin Williams should be the only TE we take this class.

OT (2 Commits): Zachary Pare and Shane Block are both solid HS tackle prospects. I think the staff needs to get a JUCO OT in a really bad way. The upper classmen depth at OT is scary thin. One of the must haves as we close the class.

OG/C (1 Commit): Alex Snow is our only guard commit right now. Though we do have Clayton Woods already on campus as a Dec. grad. The staff appears to be in contact with a few JUCO OG's right now. Appears they want 1 more.

Antonio Jones-Davis Update

You guys are going to like this one. Vero Beach defensive back Antonio Jones-Davis tells me that coach Coker and Popovich will pay him a visit either today or tomorrow. Why is this important? Well, Jones-Davis is the cousin of UTSA target and current Georgia Southern commit Alex Davis. Coker and Popovich will pay Antonio and Alex a visit either today or tomorrow. When i asked Jones-Davis if Alex was still committed to Georgia Southern he said " right now he is." He says that UTSA wants to get him and Alex down for an official before national signing day.

I am done trying to figure out the numbers, so lets just enjoy the ride till national signing day.

UTSA adds home game against Southern for 2017 season

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA announced Tuesday that it will host Southern in a non-conference home game on Sept. 2, 2017, at the Alamodome.

The Roadrunners and Jaguars, a Football Championship Subdivision member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), have never met on the gridiron. Southern, located in Baton Rouge, La., finished 9-4 overall and won the SWAC West Division with an 8-1 mark in 2014. The Jaguars suffered a 38-24 setback to Alcorn State in the SWAC Championship Game.

UTSA now has three non-conference games scheduled for 2017, as it will play Baylor on Sept. 9 in Waco and Texas State on Sept. 23 in San Marcos.

The Roadrunners will open the 2015 slate against Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Tucson, Ariz., before returning home to host Kansas State on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Alamodome. UTSA also travels to Stillwater, Okla., for the second straight season to play Oklahoma State one week later and it will host Colorado State on Sept. 26 in the final non-conference contest of its fifth year of football. All four opponents made bowl appearances and were ranked in both The Associated Press and Amway/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Polls at one point this past season.

Jalen Campbell/Flour Bluff

Apparently Campbell had both his TCU and Oregon offers pulled. He was at one time a UT commit that lost his spot when Strong took over. Reading on Orangebloods that him and 2 other teammates are leaning towards committing to TXST together. I'm just guessing, but the other 2 are probably Dilworth and Tommy Martin. That would be a pretty big time haul for TXST. Hope the staff is at least putting our hat in the ring.

Connor Brewer - Arizona transfer

Brewer has officially been given his release from Arizona and will be a grad transfer that can play right away. He has two years left of eligibility and was originally at Texas out of high school. I've been told UTSA has interest in him and would like to gauge his interest to UTSA. It's still early in the process and Brewer hasn't yet been in official contact with the Roadrunners but UTSA would like to change that.

Even if nothing with Brewer materializes it does show UTSA is willing to go after quarterbacks to help bolster that position going into 2015.

UPDATE: Don't yet know the full extent of Brewer's interest, but can say that UTSA has been in phone contact with him, which would suggest staff has real interest. He talked to coach Brown on Saturday.

Josiah Tauaefa Update

UTSA is loading up on defensive lineman for obvious reasons. The next guy on the list is Lake Dallas defensive lineman Josiah Tauaefa. He has an official visit setup for UTSA this coming weekend. He is down to his final two schools. Once again it is UTSA versus Colorado State. If you remember UTSA beat out Colorado State for the services of wide receiver Greg Campbell.

"I'll probably decide on the visit while I'm down there." Tauaefa says. When I asked him what he is looking for in a program he replied "somewhere I could feel comfortable, get a great education, and make an impact in the football program."

If you ask me I say Tauaefa commits after his official visit this weekend. I would give it an 80% chance he commits. Problem is that Tauaefa has an official to Colorado State set for the next weekend. I still give the edge to UTSA, but having the last visit is always dangerous.

Contact Period

The final contact period for 2015 recruiting kicked off this morning meaning that we are in the final stretch for this cycle. Just three weeks until the class can sign on the dotted line. Who would be the first kid you dialed up this morning to ask to come to campus for a visit? My first choice would have been Vontrell Williams but since the staff already took care of that I would pick Thomas Hutchings.

He's a 5'10", 200 pound LB that also rushed for over a thousand yards this season for Cedar Park, leading them to the 4A state championship, much to Mike's liking. Hutchings also had 173 tackles and was named Central Texas POTY. I got to see Hutchings play against Crosby at DKR and was incredibly impressed. The kid is simply a ball player with outstanding field vision and sideline to sideline speed. He's undersized for this level but if Marcos Curry is going to start this season then Hutchings could definitely do the same in a few years. To my understanding he only has FCS offers right now.

Any local guys that you feel UTSA is missing out on? Justus Parker maybe?

Update 2: Post-2014 season/pre-Spring 2015 football roster review

I saw that the UTSA Football roster was updated so I reviewed it today and made the following observations:

- None of the mid-year enrollees (Woods, Henderson, the 3 JUCO's and transfer Cavil, and the 4 c/o 2014 greyshirts) are listed in the roster yet though perhaps they will be listed sometime around next week as classes resume at UTSA starting Monday.

- Based on my knowledge, I counted 46 players on scholarship: 9 freshmen (Bogie and Dye are indeed listed as such), 15 sophomores, 8 juniors and 14 seniors. Excluding the new additions, these numbers might change if attrition occurs sometime between now and the summer (when the 2015 signees come on board), other scholarship transfer players UTSA receives, and/or walk-on players who possibly could have been awarded football scholarships.
