[Basketball] UTSA vs MT

Tip off at 7pm gents. Tonight we got Middle Tennessee in da house. I havent watched much of their game this season. I watched them take ODU into OT where their came out with the win. They're def a quick althletic team in transition.

They lack height so hopefully we go inside to our bigs as often as possible. I seen them run a 1-3-1 zone against OSU earlier in the season. If they try that tonight our guards better recognize and expose them on the inside quick. Go Runners!!

Alex Davis & Antonio Jones-Davis Update

Popovich and Coker payed a visit to both of them today. Antonio tells me he thinks an offer is on the way. Alex says that coach Neathery is suppose to call Antonio tomorrow. Will he get an offer tomorrow? Alex is still committed to Georgia Southern, but he did say he can't wait to see the campus. He will take an official and then "see what's up." They will both taken an official the last weekend before national signing day.

Alex could be an elite pass rushing defensive end. Antonio could fit the mold for dawg linebacker.

Multiplicity but Simplicity: Why the 4-2-5 Defense

After talking with everyone at Franklin's this weekend (join us the next time it happens) I realized I should post these links. They aren't anything earth shattering but they are a good read on the 4-2-5 defense from the man himself, Gary Patterson. I like to take a look at these from time to brush up on the over all philosophy and strategy behind this defense. I know that burntorangenation.com also has some excellent primers on the 4-2-5 but I haven't had time to track those down yet.

I hope y'all enjoy, I know that I like to look at these every few months.

Shane Block and Zach Pare are really good...

I know we have been lamenting the lack of succes recruiting OTs recently, and it is easy to forget that we have two really good onse currently committed. Watch the highlights, and Mike's 101. Block and Pare are going to be good ones for us

Dallas LB on UTSA's radar

Yesterday Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle had a running recruiting post on the paper's Mean Green Blog, full of updates on various UNT targets. I read through it because it had an update on UNT commit Eli Howard (San Angelo Central), who I've mentioned here several times, and some other players of note. At the bottom of the report Vito mentioned 2015 LB William LeMasters (Dallas Parish Episcopal), who was a visitor in Denton over the weekend and has a lot of interest from UNT, but at this point only has a preferred walk-on offer from them with their numbers being tight. The note on LeMasters also mentioned that he'd received interest from UTSA.

I managed to get in touch with LeMasters on Sunday evening and ask him about how serious UTSA's interest was. Here's some of what he had to say:
"They [UTSA] were showing a lot of interest right after the end of my football season, which ended rather recently since we won state." [Note: Parish Episcopal won the TAPPS Division II state title this past season, and has enough studs in its lower classes that it will likely be favored to repeat in 2015.]
"Coach Neathery and Coach Roark both visited me at school multiple times and told me they thought I was the best linebacker in Dallas. The last time I talked to them was around two weeks ago or possibly more, and they said that they had all their offers out and they were unable to give me one at the time, so they offered me a preferred walk-on and said that if an offer came available they would give it to me."

At this point, (FCS) Marist College is his only D1 offer, and barring any more offers, his decision will likely come down to that school and UNT, but he said that "if UTSA came back into my recruitment I would consider them as a very high choice."

With LB target Austin Corbett committing to SMU over the weekend, that's one less outstanding LB offer for UTSA, though it remains to be seen if they will now offer LeMasters or any other LB on their board, and time is running out for them to do so with signing day a mere nine days hence.

As it happens, I saw LeMasters in person last fall, as the very first high school game I watched in the 2014 season was Parish Episcopal taking on public school Carrollton Ranchview. Going into the game, LeMasters wasn't on my list of players to watch, but it was hard to not notice him, as the PA man seemed to call his name on about every third defensive play, and he ended the game with 18 or 19 total tackles.

LeMasters probably won't wow anyone athletically, and at 6'1" 215 (his self-reported measurements) he has more than decent but not great size for the LB position. What he does, though, is pursue and get to the ball and make tackles, and he's what coaches would simply call, "a football player". He made TAPPS All-State at both linebacker and tight end. In 2014 he was credited with 134 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a blocked punt, and also caught 27 passes for 397 yards and 7 TDs. A college tight end, he's not, but if LB didn't work out he has the size, hands, and physicality to possibly play at H-back or fullback. For UTSA's purposes I think he's a Hawk LB.

Take a look at his highlights and see what you think. If you're on the UTSA staff and have 3-4 spots you can fill in the class, is he a guy you'd offer and try to get onto campus for a visit this weekend?

William LeMasters' senior highlights

Kent Jasmin to visit

Another offensive lineman is on the radar. This time it is Kent Jasmin out of Florida. He's recently taken a visit to Marshall and will be at UTSA this weekend. He's yet to have an offer but Popovich is his recruiting coordinator.

"I have a real good relationship with coach Pop. We talk a lot. I'm not sure what to expect on the visit but it'll be exciting to see a new place and have the experience," he said.

He's been in contact with UTSA for a "couple of months" and he said UTSA likes him as a tackle prospect. My guess is he gets an offer as soon as he meets with coach Coker.

[Basketball] UTSA vs Marshall

Roadrunners and the Thundering Herd got a 7pm tip off tonight at the Cam Henderson Center. Marshall having it a bit rough. They've fell to FAU on Saturday allowing a 14pt comeback. That loss was they're 8th in a row and dropped them to an 0-5 CUSA record.

Tonights game won't be nationally televised but GoUTSA.com supllying the following link for stats/video. Go Runners!!!

Last 4 spots for 2015

If my math is correct there are only 4 spots left for 2015. Here are my picks for these last 4 spots:

LB - Austin Corbett

UTSA has a great chance at landing him. This will probably go down to signing day.

OL - Marvis Brown

I've been trying to get in contact with him, but no luck. I know UTSA needs offensive tackles right now, but you can't pass up on a talent like Brown. He recently de-committed from SMU.

DB - Jalen Campbell

We can all agree that UTSA should offer him right? UTSA can't pass up on P5 talent.

JUCO OT

I really hope there are some names out there that we have not heard of.

*** D'Anthony Hopkins is still a big IF in this class.

Who do you guys think UTSA should target?

All-"what could have been" UTSA recruits

The discussion about Tyrone Hunt getting late interest from Baylor got me thinking about some recent recruits who either flipped from UTSA shortly before signing day in past years or who turned them down for another non-P5 school. UTSA has had some good evaluations, judging by the fact that they were one of the early offers for guys like Jordan Feuerbacher (Baylor), Cole Anderson (Iowa State), Cole Walterscheid (Oklahoma State), Connor Mayes (Minnesota), Travin Howard (TCU), and Verkedric Vaughns (Baylor), and that was just in the 2014 class. Many of them were talented enough that there was really no way they were going to end up at UTSA, but some of them were only flipped (or waited to commit until) very late in the process.

So, why not see where a few almost Roadrunners are now, and we can speculate on what their prospects might be for 2015 had they signed with your favorite school instead.

S Travin Howard (2014) - flipped from UTSA to TCU about 2 weeks before signing day.
Currently listed as 6'1" 190. He appeared in all 13 of TCU's games as a true freshman in 2014, though he did not record any stats.

S Jared McGee (2014) - Committed to UTSA, then accepted a late grayshirt offer from Northwestern and flipped the weekend before signing day. I think I was a bigger fan of him than most on the board were.
Currently listed as 6'1" 220. If he's really filled out that much and is still as much of a ball-hawk as he was at Mansfield Legacy, he's gonna be a nice player in the Big Ten.

WR Brandon Colon (2014) - signed with Navy over offers from UTSA and a pair of Ivy League schools.
Currently listed as 6'4" 205, played in all 13 of Navy's games as a true freshman in 2014, made 3 catches for 39 yards. Moved to Los Fresnos from Sherman before his junior year, and it always hurts to lose south TX kids to out-of-state programs, even a service academy.

S Denzel Johnson (2013) - UTSA was his only offer for a long time, and after taking an official there in late January he took one to TCU the weekend before signing day and committed there.
Currently listed as 6'2" 205, has played in every game since he arrived on campus, making 6 total tackles as a true freshman in 2013, and 16 total stops this past season.

OL Dillon Vaughan (2013) - Chose to sign with West Texas A&M over UTSA, joining his older brother Dustin, who broke WTA&M school records at QB and signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.
Currently listed as 6'6" 298, started five games at right tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2014, and appeared in most of the other games.

OL Derek Elmendorff (2013) - Had a Daryl Godfrey-like recruitment, where he de-committed from UTEP in December 2012 and flipped to UTSA, then flipped back to UTEP on January 20, 2013 after being recruited by its new coaching staff.
Currently listed as 6'3" 310, redshirted as a freshman, then started 11 games at right guard as a RS freshman in 2014.

Those are a few who came to mind, I'm sure some of you who've followed the team much closer and for much longer could point to some others.

OT: Austin-based Pluckers Wing Bar is coming to SA in 2015

Saw this tweet yesterday from Pluckers's official Twitter account that they're planning to open their 1st San Antonio location sometime this year.

https://twitter.com/Pluckers/status/557642996397928448/photo/1

So far, no word on when exactly it'll open or where exactly in SA it will be located at. Hopefully they build it by UTSA. In my opinion, and based on my experiences of going there from when I lived in Austin as a UT undergrad, it's the type of restaurant that somewhat caters to college students and alumni (and sports fans for that matter).
